About Maiden Alley Cinema

Our Mission

The mission of Maiden Alley Cinema is to use film as a means to provide entertainment, promote visual literacy, create cross-cultural awareness and promote filmmaking as an artform.  As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, MAC is dedicated to enhancing culture through film.

Our Programming

Film is becoming a clear and present venue for artists to express themselves and their viewpoints. It rides along side music as another way to entertain and support what has become a billion dollar industry by some, and also which can be used by others as a purely artistic tool.

Today mainstream film has become a part of modern day life. We can barely turn our heads with out seeing or hearing about the next big film and what a Hollywood insider is doing with their free time. What tends to remain hidden is how the next great filmmaker of our time is using film in Boise, Tokyo, Aberdeen or Olsow. Our interest in film here at Maiden Alley goes beyond the visible business aspect of film as Hollywood uses it and into the heart of what film can offer us in the way of documentary, animation, experimental, and narrative filmmaking.

Individuals finding funding, and working outside the mainstream industry create what we call independent film. Whether they choose not to take part in Hollywood’s system, or have yet to break in, these films and filmmakers are arguably the purest there are. To bring a film from simply a passing idea to a script or outline, to a recorded image and a final print is, for a filmmaker, an emotional, financial and time intensive task. The artistic ability and heart and soul it takes to create a film without support from the mainstream film industry is proof positive that there is more behind what we show than an interest in money and “cool action scenes”. Be it foreign or domestic, we strive to offer the best in filmmaking, and the best in films.

Our History

The Paducah Film Society, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was founded in 1991 by a group of arts-minded individuals who saw a need for an outlet for foreign, independent and documentary film. For the first five years of operation, PFS screened one film per month, Sundays at the Cinema. As interest increased within the community, programming expanded to multiple screenings. While the space rented from Paducah's Market House Theatre was adequate, there were limitations as to how often films could be presented due to the demand of the Market House's live production programming. A new home was needed, and Maiden Alley Cinema was born.

Since then, Paducah Film Society (Maiden Alley Cinema) has become one of the area's leading arts organizations, bringing the art of the film to a much wider audience. The regular weekly films, special film events, live music series (Music@MAC), children's programs (Movies for Me) and vintage film series (Film Brew) provide an ever-changing and exciting embellishment to the growing cultural community of Paducah, Kentucky.

The Columbia Theatre Restoration

The Paducah Art House Alliance (formerly Paducah Film Society) is a newly reformed non-profit entity that has been established to supervise and manage the future collaboration of Maiden Alley Cinema and the Columbia Theatre as well as the restoration project being undertaken to renovate the landmark Columbia Theatre.  Throughtout the movement to restore the art palace, Maiden Alley Cinema has been deeply involved as a partner.  Once The Columbia Theatre is restored and operational the PAHA board will serve as the governing body for the two theatres when they are both operating in tandem.  Presently, Maiden Alley Cinema still operates under an Advisory Board making decisions on the current operations.
