Based on a real-life case in 1925, the film follows two great lawyers arguing the case for, and against, a Tennessee science teacher accused of the crime of teaching Darwin's theory of evolution. The film fictionalizes the events of the legal proceedings widely known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, so named after its defendant John Scopes. Scopes was a Tennessee science teacher, and a native of Paducah.
Before the screening, retired Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham will take the floor to talk about the history and legacy of the Scopes trial.
The Paducah Film Society is Maiden Alley Cinema's own monthly movie club, screening classic, cult, and foreign films in western Kentucky. PFS is supported by Maiden Alley Cinema, WKMS, and local donors.
